Meals on Wheels was established
in East London in 1964

The purpose at that time was to provide meals to the elderly in the community. The programme has since then evolved into a National programme targeting the poorest of the poor and vulnerable person in South Africa. In September 2009 MOWCS received their new NPO registration certificate.

All six area offices also received their NPO registration certificates by October 2009. The new National Director was appointed in July 2009. Meals on Wheels affiliates range from well established, financially well supported to the truly poor.

These affiliates render service from one day per week to five days per week depending on the need of the community and the funding that is available.

The following six areas are divisions of MOWCS SA
which serve the interest of the poorest of the poor and those
in need in the nine provinces of South Africa

• Eastern Cape
• KwaZulu-Natal
• Free State
• Northern Cape
• Trans-Orange Conference
• Transvaal Conference
• Western Cape

All the Areas, have Executive Directors as well as other competent staff who take care of the administration within the provinces under their jurisdiction. Each Area is registered with its own fund-raising authorization.

Within the territorial boundaries allocated to the Area, this functions as the coordinating body of affiliates, many of which are also registered with their own NPO status. Those, which are not registered, operate as projects of the Area. The major concentration of affiliate activities are in the Eastern and Western Cape, KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng. The Areas and registered Affi liates and all of the Projects, submit their own reports to the Department of Social Development, and thus all the details of their activities are reported separately.

Good Day I would like to introduce myself, I’m Robyn Du Toit, born and bred in Kimberley. I obtained my degree in B.Com Accounting at the end of 2013 from the University of the Free State. I did my internship for a year, at the Department of Economic Development and Tourism in Management Accounting, from July 2014 – June 2015. It was a great experience as it was very informative and I managed to learn a lot as well. I am currently not married and have no kids, maybe in the near future; only God knows what He has planned for me. I enjoy being active. I go to the gym daily and I enjoy jogging too, it helps me clear my head and it makes me feel good about myself.

Jackie Slabbert

Jacolene Slabbert lived in the UK for 14 years where she worked in the caring industry; working with adults with learning disabilities and special needs. She completed her career in the UK as Regional Development Manager for Voyage Care, a leading provider in the care sector. Jacolene is married to Andre and they have two boys Jeandre (14) and Jamie (8). This is what Jackie says: “I am happy to be part of Meals on Wheels as my background has always been of a caring nature and I want to be able to help to make a difference in people’s lives who need it the most. God uses us all in mysterious ways, we must just make ourselves available for His work.”

Born in the Mother City of Cape Town, I moved to Kimberley with my family when I was 5 years old. Growing up in a small town has made me appreciate the closeness of a community. I have always loved sport in school and will always have a passion for fitness and health. I am a proud mother to my 2 children, Dyllan (15) and Hayley (12). They are the reason for me wanting to be an inspiration and the best role model I can be, not only to them, but to others as well. I know I can achieve this by showing them how to live life to the fullest and show them that love and kindness is all they need to be the best versions of themselves. I feel blessed to part of the Meals on Wheels Northern Cape Area office, and I believe that with my zest for life and the gift God has instilled in me to speak life into others, I will be able to change lives and encourage others to fight poverty and hunger in South Africa.
